four steps

1

Cut friends’ hair, Fuck those peeps up. Oh yeah your gunna do some bad haircuts. I recommend this just to be comfortable with the tools in your hands\. You probably already have? How’d that go? Harder than you thought? Easier?

2

Find a mentor. Someone that values your education and is willing to invest in you. I mean, you’re going to find this a lot easier if you have already been investing in yourself and your own education. So You Tube tutorial the shit outta barbering.

Something you may not have thought of is to apprentice at a salon. I have been in this industry for over a decade. I started in a salon under an old school Italian. If you can find one of those, even better :)

If you have really been digging into barbering culture , you will have noticed that the definition of a good barber is changing. Breaking away from the steadfast model of walk-in only to appointment based.

The services offered are also expanding. At a salon you are going to get a more comprehensive education, including client experience, and colour services….thats the real cash cow yo!

3

Work for free and a lot. How long is this all going to take you? The road to Licensing is going to vary from region to region. So google that up. The time invested until you feel comfortable and can really give someone any cut on your own on average takes most people 2–5 years under their mentor. With the mentor involvement heavy at first and gradually waning.

You can drastically reduce this time though with what you put in. I was behind my own chair taking clients on my own after 1 year. I came in on my days off. I stayed late after ten hour shifts when it was slow. I walked around convincing people to let me give them free haircuts.
